The final speaker for our ‘Celebrating Women in Architecture’ event on Wednesday is Alexa Woodward.

Alexa is currently Director of Strategy and Design at Cordia Blackswan, where she leads and implements the company’s aspirations for design, including technical details, materials, sustainability, interiors and wider regeneration strategies. Prior to this Alexa had been in architectural practice for 15 years since qualification and has worked at a number of notable Birmingham architectural practices and has delivered some key buildings and projects within the city. She is also a specialist in the historic environment and is a qualified conservation architect, a visiting lecturer at BCU University and currently sits on Birmingham City Councils Conservation and Heritage Panel.

Also speaking at our ‘Celebrating Women in Architecture’ event is @selina_c_mason

Selina Mason is an Architect and masterplanner who is responsible for delivering high quality design and masterplanning across @lendlease UK and Europe urban regeneration portfolio amounting to c£30bn end value. She advises on masterplanning and design across all of Lendlease’s UK and European portfolio; currently she is also Development Director on Smithfield Birmingham, Lendlease’s partnership with Birmingham City Council on the c£2bn city centre creation of an urban quarter that includes a new home for the city’s historic Bull Ring Markets, a destination leisure and cultural offer, a new public square, integrated public transport and more than 2,000 homes with a public park and community facilities.

In 2022 Selina received an Honorary Fellowship from RIBA in recognition of her leadership in urban spatial planning and city design. She is a Design Council Ambassador and was recently appointed by the Government to the Urban Centre Recovery Task Force. She is a member of several Design Review panels and the Chair of the Havering Quality Review Panel. She represents RIBA on the National Highways Design Panel where she champions investment in better designed infrastructure.

Before joining Lendlease in 2017, she led a range of regeneration masterplans including UCL East at Stratford and Church Street for Westminster City. Until 2014 she was responsible for the delivery of the London 2012 Masterplan and the post-Games Transformation Masterplan for the Olympic Delivery Authority and subsequently the London Legacy Development Corporation. She was Director of Architecture and Design Review at the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) until 2007. She has an MSc in Urban and Regional Planning (LSE) and studied architecture at the University of Sheffield and Cambridge University. She was Rome Scholar in Architecture in 1993- 1994.

Hannah is Co-Owner & Director of Birmingham based furniture consultancy @pi_sq_ltd working within the property, healthcare and commercial sectors. Having set Pi SQ up on June 2020, her additional roles include diversity and inclusion trustee for well-known charity LoveBrum, trustee for local housing association Spring Housing and involved in the Future Workplace Birmingham cohort. Hannah is very passionate about ensuring businesses have diversity and social mobility at the forefront of all processes.

Anna is founding Director of @interventionarchitecture , a RIBA chartered Architect and listed RIBA Rising Star leading the studio in Digbeth, Birmingham. Working regularly with artists and local community groups, Anna and her team have developed a way of working which provides a holistic design approach for projects, working across fields of design, exhibitions, homes, meanwhile and mixed-use developments.

Anna is also a Visiting Lecturer at Birmingham School of Architecture and Design, sits on the Birmingham City Council Conservation and Heritage panel, and is a trustee of the Birmingham Big Art Project.

Our final speaker for our Diversity and Inclusion

Our final speaker for our Diversity and Inclusion Launch event next Thursday is Emma Langley. Emma graduated from Birmingham City University in June 2022 with a 2:1 in BA Architecture and is currently seeking a part 1 Architectural Assistant role.

Having been diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis at 18 months old and Uveitis of the eyes - to which she lost the vision in her right eye - she is proud to be a voice for disability and accessibility within the architectural industry. Her passion for Architecture stems from her desire to use her personal experiences of the built environment to make the world a more welcoming place to people with disabilities.

During her undergraduate studies she was able to work on several projects that addressed the issues of accessibility and inclusivity, designing for clients that she felt were often overlooked.

Since graduating, Emma had the opportunity to share her architectural journey so far through an online platform called 'ZeroBeyond', as part of a series of interviews with recent graduates of architecture. Her article - entitled 'Accessibility and Sensibility - A Universal Sense!' - explored her background, motivations for becoming an architect and final year undergraduate project. She was honoured to be given a platform to share her experiences, and hopes to become a strong advocate for inclusive design in the future.

Speaking at our Diversity and Inclusion Launch Eve

Speaking at our Diversity and Inclusion Launch Event is Farhana Jiwa, a practicing Architect at JTP LLP in London. She completed her architectural education at the The University of Edinburgh and the The University of Sheffield – where she pursued a dual Masters in Architecture and Town and Regional Planning. Her experience includes work on a variety of award-wining projects, from detailed building design, to large scale masterplanning for strategic sites around the UK.

As an Architect, Farhana is interested in how spaces work to integrate communities and encourage daily activity in cities – from the micro to macro scale. Having grown up in Kenya and lived in various cities, she has developed a passion to enhance people’s quality of life, using architecture as a sustainable tool for change and development. As such, she is particularly keen on context-driven and user-centred design across a range of sectors.

In addition to her role as an Architect, Farhana has played an integral role in the developing her practice’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Group. Given her passion and experience in Outreach, Farhana is actively involved in the organisation and delivery of social value initiatives, in addition to outreach events and local engagement with schools and the Community. These include collaboration with the Mulberry School for Girls , Harris Federation, The Kingston Academy, Swedenborg Gardens, and the RIBA. Through her roles, she works actively to inspire and encourage youth to realise their potential and be positive change-makers, whether in Architecture, or the wider profession.

Most recently, she was selected as a RIBA Rising Star for her outreach initiatives and hand-on approach to promoting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

Also speaking at our Diversity and Inclusion Launch next week is Pete Badger, Chair of Stride Treglown’s internal inclusion and diversity group, Stride Together. Stride Together covers the practice’s multidisciplinary offices throughout the UK. When not chairing the group Pete is a successful Associate Town Planner & Sustainability Consultant.

Pete graduated as a Master of Town and Country Planning from The University of Manchester in 2005. He joined Stride Treglown’s Town Planning team in 2005 and in 2009 became a Chartered Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (MRTPI). One of his first projects involved working with a major high-street bank to secure planning permission for level access for all to hundreds of properties across their UK branch network, following the introduction of the Disability Discrimination Act.

Between 2010 and 2017 Pete’s focus shifted to sustainability assessment and he became qualified and licenced as a BREEAM Official Assessor and BREEAM Accredited Professional. From 2017, Pete has adopted a dual role, splitting his time between Town Planning and Sustainability Assessment. He now spends most of his time on Town Planning projects and is Healthcare Lead within the Stride Treglown Town Planning team.

Pete joined the committee for Proud Bristol in February 2018. Proud Bristol is a cross-industry LGBTQ+ networking organisation in the West of England, dedicated to providing professionals a safe space within which to network and make new contacts. Pete held positions of Committee Member, Co-Chair, and Market & Media Secretary.

Also in 2018, Pete was one of the founding four members of Stride Treglown’s Inclusion and Diversity Working Group. From 2021, the group expanded significantly and became ‘Stride Together’ and after an internal nomination process Pete became Chair of the group in 2023. His initial aims are to facilitate and guide discussion within Stride Treglown on all areas of inclusion and diversity, helping Stride Together members and the wider business to identity key aims and crucially actions that can be undertaken to make a real difference to people both internally and externally.

Next in our line up of speakers is @bareeraborhanarchitecture @bareeraborhan. Bareera is a Part 1 architectural assistant at @dca.london and a student on the @theuniversityofsheffield MArch Collaborative Practice course as well as a young trustee at the @architecturefoundation.

Bareera is on the @opencityaccelerate Advisory Panel, where her and other board members provide feedback for the educational wing of the London based architecture charity that champions equity within the built environment. She has previously collaborated with the think tank Female Architects in Minority Ethnic groups (FAME) and the architecture based youth initiative Urban Learners. She worked on the inaugural award-winning social value initiative the ‘Peoples Pavilion’ as a member of the core team between 2019 and 2021. Prior to that she had worked with Beyond the Box Consultants, who spear headed the Peoples Pavilion, on several outreach schemes. Bareera was part of the recent inaugural @homegrownplus
NY-LON initiative, she has subsequently written about her experiences in the @architectsjournal and spoken about them at the @RIBA and various events between 2022 and 2023.

Bareera completed her undergraduate bachelor’s degree in architecture at the University of the Arts London, Central St Martins. During her time at Central St Martins she was awarded the Reyner Banham Award for Excellence in Scholarship for my dissertation ‘Democratic Architecture in the Bengal’. She was also nominated for a RIBA award for innovation in her first year. Shortly after graduating university Bareera founded the developing initiative the ‘Archi-review’ that aims to empower prospective architecture students to make informed choices regarding university courses, in collaboration with the architectural platform to scale.

We are delighted to announce our next speaker @sum

We are delighted to announce our next speaker @sumitasingha_riba, Sumita is a chartered architect, author and teacher, with a passion for the environment, equity and ethics.

She received an OBE for services to architecture in 2021.

Sumita's design practice, Ecologic, has carried out a diverse portfolio of projects in the UK and abroad. She works collaboratively and is currently a member of a women led collective. Amongst others, she has received the UIA:UNESCO International, @insideatkins Inspire for Inspirational leadership and Women In Business awards. Sumita also speaks regularly on podcasts and on radio about architecture. She sits on competition and design review panels. Recently Sumita was part of a national panel that came up with recommendations on how to improve social housing.

She is keen to support the next generation of architects. Sumita has lectured on architecture and technical design for over 25 years in the UK and abroad. She is a visiting Professor at the Politecnico di Milano where she runs a course about women in architecture. Sumita teaches Professional Practice at the @uniwestminster and an external examiner at the Architectural Association and @ravensbourne_architecture.

She has been a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (@RIBA) since 1993. Sumita has been a member of many RIBA committees such as the Practice and Professions, Professional standards panel, and the Ethics and Sustainable Development Commission. Sumita was elected to the RIBA Council 2011-14 and again in 2021 as a national candidate.

As part of seeing more inclusion and equity in the profession, she set up Architects For Change, the equality forum at RIBA, and was past Chair of Women in Architecture. Sumita is the co-founder of @asianarchitects.

First up in our line up of speakers for our launch for the Diversity and Inclusion Focus Group is @bettsbubbles.

Betty Owoo is a London-based spatial designer, educator and writer. She is currently an architectural designer at @befirstregeneration where she facilitates the development of responsive urban and architectural visions and strategies to deliver social housing across a range of sites in Barking & Dagenham. She is also a founding member of @patch_collective_ a multidisciplinary collective that uses writing as a springboard to create spatial interventions and design ephemeral events, through the lens of being of a diaspora.

A skilled communicator, she facilitates and supports digital output and marketing for two architectural charities, the London Neighbourhood Scholarship Trust and the @architecturefoundation. As a freelance writer, she has been published in the architectural journals @thearchitecturalreview, @recessed.space Space and Journal A, and in the Sound Advice publication Now You Know. She is a guest critic at the @uniofnottingham, where she previously taught second and third year design studio.

She was previously co-chair of the @architecturefoundation Young Trustees, where she implemented a varied curatorial programme that celebrated underrepresented and divergent voices within spatial cultures. During this time, she worked on a plethora of initiatives including Business as Usual, Life Outside Architecture, Civic Rituals and Peer Review.

In 2022 Betty was selected as one of the @RIBA J’s 2020 Rising Stars in recognition of her talents and contributions to wider architectural discourse. She is also an advocate for @blackfemarc, a global membership network and enterprise founded to increase the visibility of black and black mixed heritage women within the architectural industry and other built environment fields.

She is currently studying for her Part III at the Architectural Association, and holds a DipArch from the @lsofarch and a BArch from the University of Nottingham.

Join us for our Diversity and Inclusion Focus Group Launch party. Hear from our inspiring speakers @sumitasingha_riba @bareeraborhanarchitecture @farhanajiwa @petejbadgerst @bettsbubbles and more to discuss their experiences in the industry to date.

It is no secret that Diversity and Inclusion across all industries and professions, particularly architecture, is lacking. The BAA are excited to offer a platform for those in the industry to discuss, educate, explore and promote the implementation of D&I into the industry.

Our group will aim to include conversation and action around race, culture, sexual orientation, class and identity. It is crucial we include different perspectives and backgrounds to ensure the diverse mix are involved, valued and embedded.

We are inviting the architectural community to share their stories on the night. If you would like to include your experiences on the evening, please email baa@brumarchitecture.com with the following details by Monday 13th February:
1. Full Name, Job Title and Company
2. A short sentence on your identity or what makes you diverse
3. Why D&1 is important for you- 250 words (max.) Suggestion could pick up on any examples of when you have felt your diversity has excluded/ isolated you in the profession, difficulties you have faced you feel have been a result of your diversity and examples of when you felt really included despite your diversity.

The BAA would like to introduce its new Diversity and Inclusion Focus Group and its lead Kavita Dhande!

Kavita has been with the BAA since it’s revival and her role until recently has been Social Media Manager and Board Member. From all the committee a huge congratulations to you Kavita and we're all very excited to see what you and the new focus group have in store for the architectural community.

The Diversity and Inclusion Focus Group are excited to offer a platform to those in the industry to discuss, educate, explore and promote the implementation of D&I. Conversations, events and workshops will be around race, culture, sexual orientation, class and identity. Stay tuned to find out more about our launch party on Thursday 16th February.

Kavita is an Architect at @corstorphinewright with an interest in social responsibility, sustainability and working with young adults and children. She leads the CSR team at C&W and is an active @riba Architect’s Ambassador delivering architectural workshops and family days. Kavita is keen to bring all these aspects into her role and continue these conversations within the BAA and community.

Kavita also draws in experience from her role on the committee for @womeninarchuk and as a @bco_uk member. Formerly, Kavita has sat on Student Councils for her universities and acted as a Student and Course representative for Architecture as well as co-founding the @northumbriaarchsoc

The BAA is looking forward to kicking off 2023 right with introducing you all to several new faces within our committee. We are really excited about the year ahead and are keen to get everyone onboard with us as we set off on a new year. As always we like to welcome the new year in with free food and drinks and the bar will be open till 10pm!

We are also excited to start the year off by hosting the first Small to Medium Enterprise(SME) evening. At the BAA we are keen to make sure no one feels left behind and to start the year off by looking at a number of various topics and discussion prompts throughout the evening as we hold round table style discussions in small groups. The aim of this exercise is to not only help our networking efforts, but to also share knowledge, opinions and solutions to the current and future issues in the Architecture and Design space.

Join the Women in Architecture team for the second

Join the Women in Architecture team for the second in our series Mentoring Mornings, where we will be encouraging conversation, collaboration and connections between women of all backgrounds, ages and career stages. An opportunity to connect face-to-face with like-minded women and build your network over breakfast.

These mentoring mornings are aimed at women in the architecture and design industry from all stages in their career: student, professional or other. By opening up a forum for discussion, we hope to disrupt the familiar narrative of architectural history, from which women have been largely erased, by advocating for, supporting, inspiring and championing women in architecture. In the profession today, women still earn less; occupy few senior leadership roles and often leave before fulfilling their potential. As a result, contemporary practice has been deprived of women’s voices, inspiration and role models, creating a legacy of unconscious bias. This affects women’s careers and the fabric of our cities.

These conversations will take place in a safe space on a monthly basis, out of which we hope we can start to identify and advocate for concrete proposals for policy changes to aid women’s development in the profession and education - and help make our cities better places for women.
