Event Details

Join the Birmingham Architectural Association & Jonathan Falkingham MBE, Founder and Creative Director of Urban Splash for an exclusive talk and tour of the IT WILL NEVER WORK exhibition to mark the end of the Birmingham leg of this touring exhibition, hosted by RIBA West Midlands & Glenn Howells Architects.

After an initial introduction to the exhibition he will talk through the displays giving an insight into each period in Urban Splash’s history: an unplanned trip from Madchester to Brexit via Easyjet and driverless cars, with a quick history of unorthodox thinking and a few buildings along the way. The evening will end with a Q&A session where you can put your questions to Jonathan.

In their first 25 years, Urban Splash have won over 40 RIBA Awards. These cross the spectrum from Small Projects to the Stirling Prize Shortlist and cover refurbishment and new-build on residential, leisure and commercial schemes. Amongst the Birmingham-based developments celebrated within the exhibition is the iconic Grade II Listed Rotunda building and the transformation of Fort Dunlop, the Midlands monolith which stands adjacent to the M6 motorway. Urban Splash are currently working with GHA and Places for People on the new Port Loop scheme which recently broke ground.

This touring exhibition co-curated with RIBA North explores their award-winning projects in the context they were created and against the specific challenges and opportunities of the day. It tries to understand what, in the Urban Splash approach, connects all these projects, including award-winning buildings and cuts across the immediate context to form a consistent body of work and essential ethos.

Drinks and nibbles will be provided, and exhibition merchandise will be available to purchase.

Please note we have restrictions on BDM’s specification managers & recruiters attending this event.
