Phil Twiss – Honorary Board Member

Introducing Birmingham Architectural Association Honorary Board Member, Phil Twiss.

Phil (BA (Hons), Dip Arch, Dip PS Arch, RIBA) is Design Director and Senior Associate at the Birmingham office of international architecture and design firm Gensler. He has over 20 years post-qualified experience, 16 of which have been spent working at leading practices in Birmingham including Make and Associated Architects. Working closely with the city’s planning officers and leaders has enabled him to gain a broad experience and deep understanding of architectural design, opportunities and constraints, and often competing priorities faced by architects, developers and the local authority as they seek to maximise the potential of sites to regenerate and revive this proud City.

As a born and bred Brummie Phil is a passionate believer in Birmingham and supporter of the current renaissance the City is undergoing. He believes that an holistic and integrated approach to design is essential to creating successful living and working environments that support neighbourhoods and create recognisable Civic and Community identity. Phil will be discussing the future needs of communities and the opportunities that are created by an digitally connected City in 2030.

As a Chartered Architect he is currently serving as Regional Chair of RIBA West Midlands, a member of RIBA Council and RIBA external examiner for Coventry University School of Architecture’s undergraduate course. As well as his roles with RIBA he is an active committee member for Birmingham Architectural Association and guest lecturer and speaker at several schools of architecture in the West Midlands. 

His broad experience includes residential design, refurbishment, hotel design, interior architecture, commercial office design and fit out, master-planning, urban design, private and social housing, student accommodation, education, community, and civic architecture. critical facilities and data centre design, He has been directly involved in these from concept development, production information, contract administration through to completion in both client facing and team leading roles working with major national and international clients.
