Widuri Clare

BCU Ba(Hons) Architecture

Introducing BAA Student Ambassador and BCU Ba(Hons) Architecture student, Widuri Clare.

Design, and Architecture specifically has a long history of the ‘trial and error’ method where projects are undertaken with an ‘I know best’ mentality. Jane Jacobs describes that we as designers should holistically try to understand the needs and wants of the people to bring architecture and design down to a humanising level and this is the exact stance that I have on the involvement of students within the wider profession.

Personally, as a Muslim girl who proudly wears the headscarf, there is a lot of discussion to be had in both the representation of people like me within the architectural profession but also about encouraging those who may be holding back because of certain stigma’s regarding this.

The change that I am striving towards is a profession that is genuinely accepting of people of all faiths/ethnic backgrounds and actively tries to bridge any gaps for those who feel the profession is out of their reach.
